Understanding Thyroid Health

Overview

Your thyroid is a small gland with a big job. It produces hormones that help regulate metabolism, energy, body temperature, heart function, digestion, muscle function, brain function, and many other body systems throughout your body. Although it is small, the thyroid plays an important role in supporting your overall health and quality of life.

Why It Matters

When thyroid function changes, it can affect many areas of the body—not just your neck. Changes in thyroid hormone levels may influence energy, sleep, mood, heart rate, body temperature, digestion, muscles, skin, weight, and other body systems. Understanding these connections can help you recognize how the thyroid fits into the bigger picture of your overall wellness.

Understanding Thyroid Function

Thyroid Hormones — T3 & T4

TSH — Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone

Overview:

T4 is the primary hormone released by the thyroid and can be converted into T3, the more active thyroid hormone.

Why It Matters:

T3 and T4 help regulate metabolism, energy use, body temperature, heart function, and many other body processes.

TSH — Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone

TSH — Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone

Overview:

TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and signals the thyroid to produce and release thyroid hormones.

Why It Matters:

TSH is an important part of the communication between the pituitary and thyroid that helps regulate thyroid function.

Reverse T3 (rT3)

Overview:

Reverse T3 is an inactive form of thyroid hormone created through one of the pathways the body uses to metabolize T4.

Why It Matters:

It helps illustrate that thyroid hormone metabolism involves different conversion pathways, not just the production of active T3.

Calcitonin

Overview:

Calcitonin is a hormone produced by specialized cells within the thyroid gland.

Why It Matters:

It participates in the regulation of calcium and works as part of the body's larger system for maintaining calcium and bone metabolism.

Thyroid Antibodies — TPO Ab & TgAb

Thyroid Antibodies — TPO Ab & TgAb

Overview:

TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies are immune-system antibodies directed against proteins involved with the thyroid.

Why It Matters:

testing for these antibodies can provide information when healthcare professionals are evaluating autoimmune thyroid conditions.

Thyroid Conditions

Overview

Thyroid conditions affect how the thyroid gland produces and regulates hormones that support metabolism, energy, body temperature, heart function, digestion, brain function, and many other body systems. Some conditions cause the thyroid to produce too much hormone, while others reduce hormone production or affect the thyroid gland itself.

Why It Matters

Understanding common thyroid conditions can help you become more informed about your health and the terms you may hear during medical appointments or when reviewing thyroid laboratory tests. Early awareness and appropriate medical evaluation can help identify the cause of symptoms and guide the next steps in care. This information is for education and awareness only. The signs and symptoms described below can occur with many different health conditions and should not be used to self-diagnose a thyroid disorder. If you have concerns about your health, speak with your healthcare provider for proper evaluation and testing.
